Rachel Kofron, RN
Rachel is our lead nurse and has been with us for many years. She is the mother of two daughters, both born at home under our care. Rachel herself was also born at home under the care of a French midwife and raised in Hawaii on the island of Maui. She grew up with a strong appreciation of the midwife's role in her community, one who was seen as mother, teacher, healer, and friend to her family.
Rachel received her BA from Lewis & Clark College in Sociology and Cultural Anthropology with an undergraduate thesis on "The Medicalization of Childbirth in America". In 2004, she received her BS in nursing from the Oregon Health & Science University, where she worked for a number of years before joining AGB, gaining experience as a labor and delivery nurse.
“My work as a doula and registered nurse has taught me that the birth environment plays a significant role in shaping birth experiences for mother, child, and family which is why I am excited to be part of the community and home birth practice of A Gentle Beginning. My greatest education came from my own childbirth experiences. In pregnancy and birth I learned about surrendering and the importance of being with women as they journey towards the place within themselves where birthing happens.”
Jessamyn Bothwell RN, IBCLC
Jessamyn earned her BSN from the University of Portland in 2001. She has worked as a mother-baby RN for 15 years, and has been practicing as a Lactation Consultant for 10 years. A strong advocate for woman centered care, Jessamyn is passionate about supporting women through the transition into motherhood.
She is returning to school to pursue her nurse midwifery degree, with a special interest in perinatal mood disorders. The mother of two very active boys, both born with midwives, she enjoys tending her small farm, raising chickens, gardening, and keeping bees.
Kristy Rose, RN
Kristy grew up in Dallas, TX studying literature and anthropology at Louisiana Scholars' College and the University of Malta. After the experience of having a midwife supported pregnancy and birth in 2006 she started to attend births in her community eventually becoming a birth doula. She has worked as a postpartum doula in two out of hospital birth centers before completing a Bachelors in Nursing at Oregon Health and Science University. Currently, she is completing a Masters in Nurse Midwifery at OHSU. Kristy Rose is drawn to the relational aspects of this work- particularly watching mothers access their deep intuition and strength, observing babies grow in trust, and witnessing families learn from their newborns. Outside of meeting new beings and being a student, she enjoys time with her partner and two children, cooking, practicing yoga, camping, and finding new places to hike.
Maggie Flesher, RN
Maggie grew up in a small town in Ohio and remembers having a fascination with childbirth starting at a very young age. She did her undergraduate at the University of Colorado at Boulder studying International Affairs and Spanish. During her college years, she developed a strong interest in women’s health and reproductive rights, working at a women’s rights organization, writing her thesis on intercultural childbirth in the region of Ayacucho, Peru. She did a doula training through CAPPA and began toying with how she could get more involved with birth work in the future. After college,Maggie moved to Wisconsin to work for a healthcare IT company and began rethinking her life purpose. At that time, she decided to listen to her heart, switch gears, and start pursuing a career in midwifery.
Maggie received her BSN in 2016 at Oregon Health & Science University, and is currently continuing her studies there for a masters degree in nurse midwifery. She feels so lucky to be included in the precious moments surrounding birth, and loves supporting and empowering women and their families during this important life transition. When Maggie isn't studying or attending births, she enjoys practicing yoga, hiking and exploring the beautiful PNW outdoors, cooking, sharing meals and laughter with friends.
Mary Lucarelli, RN
